Of all the gifts that God has loaned me, the love of beauty is the one I cherish most. God constantly surrounds us with beauty, whether we notice it or not. Even brokenness is beautiful when seen through his eyes. When Job demanded to know why all he had been given was lost, in response God showed him what Job had never lost--wonder heaped up on wonder, the results of God's creative power. Of all miracles, the one that allows us to recieve wonder is the greatest miracle of all--for us to breathe beauty along with the air into our hearts, to eat the loaf of it, to drink from the fountain of it, someday to sleep in it and dream it, at last to wake to it and walk in it.
Giving and recieving are the respirations of the soul.
To give is a blessing,
To recieve, a sacrament.
